First Annual Edgewater Volunteer Fair slated for May 17

By Glynn Wade

EDGEWATER — Residents who are interested in giving back to the greater Elgin and Fox Valley community are invited to attend the first annual Volunteer Fair at Creekside Lodge on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 12. p.m. At this event, more than 20 different locally based organizations will have representatives and information on hand about the types of services they provide, hoping to attract new volunteers.

As everyone knows, when people set out to help others, they often end up feeling that they’ve been helped themselves. New information gained, new skills acquired, new friendships made and a chance to use talents, skills and knowledge that seniors have developed over a lifetime are just some of the rewards that older volunteers enjoy.

Then again, there’s that warm sense of well-being that occurs when giving of one’s time and talents to those in need.

Organizations participating in the Volunteer Fair are the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elgin, the Elgin Choral Union, Fox Valley Food for Health, Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice, The Salvation Army, City of Elgin Parks and Recreation, Senior Services Associates, the Elgin Lions Club, Food for Greater Elgin, Advocate Sherman Hospital, Northern Illinois Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity of the Northern Fox Valley, Administer Justice, Elgin History Museum, All Peoples Interfaith Food Pantry, Gail Borden Public Library, CASA Kane County, Elgin Golden K Kiwanis, The Literacy Connection, Anderson Animal Shelter, Ecker Center for Mental Health, and the Community Crisis Center.

More organizations may be added by the date of the event. Everyone is invited to stop by and check out the opportunities that are available.
