May 8, 1984 – A barrier on the River Thames is built to stop flooding in London. The barrier protects most boroughs of Greater London from flooding due to the high tides coming from the North Sea.

May 9, 1785 – British inventor Joseph Bramah patents the beer-pump handle. Let’s drink to that.

May 10, 1908 – The first celebration of Mother’s Day in the U.S. is held in Philadelphia.

May 11, 1502 – Christopher Columbus begins his fourth and last trip to what he thought were the Indies. He never knew he had discovered a new continent.

May 12, 1926 – The Italian-built Norge airship becomes the first vessel to fly over the North Pole.

May 13, 609 – Pope Boniface I converts Rome’s Pantheon into Santa Maria Rotonda, a Catholic church.

May 14, 1904 – The first Olympics held in the U.S. are hosted in St. Louis.
