Broan bathroom fan kits revisited

By The Woodchucks

Question: I seem to remember a past article that talked about a Broan bathroom fan kit that would greatly reduce the noise of the fan.

Answer: All of the past articles are available on the Sun Day website. This question has been asked so often I am repeating it as this is a good solution to a common problem. There is a kit sold at Menards and Lowes that will solve your problem. The bath fan upgrade kit is Broan #690. The fan in your current system is probably a blade type fan. This kit changes that fan to a squirrel cage type that is much quieter.

Broan 690 Upgrade Kit replaces the models below:

The following bullet points on the upgrade kit are taken directly from the Broan web site:

• Upgrading bath fan performance is easy with our all-in-one kit. NO rewiring. NO new duct work. NO hassles. ALL in just 10 minutes!

• New motor (60 CFM and 3.0 Sones) reduces sound up to 50%, improves air movement up to 20% and helps control humidity that causes mold and mildew.

• New Grille: Upgrade your bathroom’s look with a modern white grille.

• Wrench: No special tools are required. The kit has everything you need, including new components, a wrench, fasteners, and complete step-by-step instructions.

• Two motor plates included to fit most economy fans.

Ceiling fans

Remember to reverse the direction of your ceiling fans for summer if you used them last winter. In the winter they blow up so that they just mix the warm air at the ceiling with the cooler air further down. In the summer they should blow down so that the air blows across your body and cools you. Most fans can be reversed with the remote control.
