Ask the Woodchucks: July 17, 2014

By The Woodchucks

Question: We live in Neighborhood 28. Sometime, over the winter, the outside vent cover that has 3 slats and covers a grated vent near the gable of the roof on the south side of the building has cracked. We tried to call Pulte to see: 1. is it a covered warranty item (probably not) 2. to see if they could tell us what company did the siding so they could tell us how to replace it. We spent 2 hours on the internet with no luck.

Can anyone tell us where we could buy one to replace the broken one? The opening seems to be 8 inch x 8 inch, the louver blades are 7 inches side to side.

If you can, please help us.

Answer: The siding on Del Webb houses is called Royal siding. You can get replacement siding as well as the grill for gable mounted vents at either of these suppliers.

Gas Grill Caution

Every couple of years, we hear about residents that move the grill on the deck or patio up close to the house. The grill is very hot when you are cooking and the siding is not tolerant of this heat. Be sure to keep the grill at least five feet from the vinyl siding on your house.

Tip from a reader

We were in Florida for a month.  Upon our return, we noticed that our lighted house number was not lit. Thinking it was the bulb, we went to the Sun Day web page to look for your old article about the light. We assumed there was only one bulb. We discovered there are two. We thought it strange that both bulbs were not working—unless one had burned out without our noticing. We got to thinking maybe it was the circuit breaker; it wasn’t. Then got to thinking maybe it was tied into the GFI (ground fault interrupt) outlet on the front porch that has a reset. Sure enough, when we reset the button on the outlet the lighted house numbers were illuminated.

We think that snow blew up on our porch during one of the snow storms and caused the GFI outlet to trip. We’re sharing this so others can be aware of our experience.  We live in a Pulte Potomac home built in 2007.
