Question: We have two pieces of used furniture made from wood that strongly smell of cigarette smoke. Is there any way to get rid of the smell other than getting rid of the furniture?

Answer: The leftover tar and resin from cigarettes is what leaves the disgusting smell of smoke behind. One of the best remedies is sunlight and fresh air. Place the furniture outside in sunlight for 8-10 hours each day for three days. Check on the furniture often to be sure the sunlight is not damaging it.

There are a number of other remedies that might also help. Spreading a thin film of baking soda on the surface will absorb the smoke odor. Leave the baking soda on the surface for a day and then vacuum it off. If the odor is reduced but not gone repeat this fix.

Vinegar is also an effective odor eliminator. Put the furniture in a large lawn bag and place one or two dishes filled with vinegar in the bag before sealing it. Let it sit undisturbed for a day and check for odors. If the odor is reduced but not gone repeat this fix.

Solar Light Repair

Question: We have six solar lights along our front walk. We have had them for about four years. They worked fine up until about six months ago and one by one they failed. Can the bulbs be replaced or do we need to get new lights?

Answer: Your problem is probably the battery. These lights typically have a double A or a triple A battery. During the day the solar cell uses the sunlight to charge the battery. After dark this battery lights a small bulb. Replace the battery with the appropriate size rechargeable battery and your walkway will be lit again.
