$2 local rides offered by Village—prior registration required

By Glynn Wade

The Village of Huntley Senior Transportation Voucher Program now makes it possible for seniors aged 55 and over to obtain rides within the Village of Huntley for just $2.

Judy Abrams, a Sun City resident who spearheads The Neighborhood Angels program for Sun City seniors in need of various kinds of assistance, alerted the Sun Day newspaper to this handy community transportation service. She said that Rutledge—the previous free bus service in Kane County—has been discontinued. Abrams wants Sun City’sseniors to know about the new transportation program now offered through the Village.

Rita McMahon of the Village of Huntley told The Sun Day that this service—the Senior Transportation Voucher Program for Rutland and Hampshire Townships—is provided by Route 47 Taxi Transportation, Inc. Rides are offered Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. within the Village of Huntley only.

The charge for a one-way trip is just $2 for seniors. Riders must schedule their rides with Route 47 Taxi a minimum of 24 hours in advance, and cancellations are requested 24 hours in advance. The service is curb-to-curb, and riders must be able to physically board and exit the vehicle independently. Service animals are allowed, and caregivers can accompany the senior rider at no extra charge. Fees are paid to the driver.

Prior registration with the Village is required to use this service. The registration form is available on the Village websitewww.huntley.il.us. and when completed, can be mailed in. Or, interested parties can call the Village at 847-515-5261. For additional information, email rmcmahon@huntley.il.us.

Judy Abrams feels that the new Route 47 Taxi Transportation service will be welcomed by Sun City residents. Along with another Sun City homeowner, Kathy Ryan, and a handful of additional Sun City volunteers known as the Neighborhood Angels, Abrams has been trying to meet transportation needs and offer other assistance within the community for some time now. Services the Neighborhood Angels have been providing include offering free transportation to those who need it, such as trips to grocery stores, doctors and pharmacies.

Sun City’s Neighborhood Angels have also assisted with other senior needs as well, including tasks ranging from well-being checks to helping with pet care and gardening, changing light bulbs or even shoveling snow. Abrams said that the Angels group is small in numbers, and needs additional volunteers. Those interested in helping are invited to call her at 847-212-0513.

The Village of Huntley’s Senior Transportation Voucher Program, utilizing the services of Route 47 Taxi at such a reasonable rate, seems certain to help fill a community need, providing a viable option to getting older residents where they want to go.
