The Anthony Kawalkowski Orchestra returns to Sun City with even stronger strings

By Kelsey O'Kelley

Huntley – Progressing from a small, shoestring ensemble to a full-sized string orchestra, the Anthony Kawalkowski Orchestra is back to perform in Sun City.

The orchestra, which began in 2009, had been one of Kawalkowski’s professional dreams for decades. Currently, the group boasts 36 members (including Kawalkowski as conductor and violinist) and is working to take its troupe to the next level.

“It’s a journey, let me put it that way,” Kawalkowski said. “What I’m doing now is getting the name out there. My dream is to finally get it snowballing, so we can start setting up some concert series, and so we finally end up going across the nation. That’s the ultimate [goal].”

Luckily, Kawalkowski’s high hopes match his level of determination, which comes from a fitting source.

“It goes with a saying my high school violin teacher had hanging in the studio. It says ‘perseverance brings success.’ I saw it every week,” he said.

Although the orchestra is continuing to establish itself, it has already come a long way since its inception. Previously only playing a few summer shows, the group has gained more notoriety, which Kawalkoswki admits has cost him much free time and a lack of sleep.

However, his passion for the project fuels its spirit. The orchestra’s “let’s have fun” motto helps its members prepare for an increased number of shows and a growing repertoire.

The Sun City performance will include a wide array of music and a special-guest performance by Wayne Messmer, best known for singing the National Anthem for Chicago Cubs’ games.

“There’s going to be music from Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis, some swing, and an ethnic section,” Kawalkowski said, adding that sometimes the orchestra incorporates skits and backdrops at its shows.

At the end of the day, Kawalkowski feels that performing with heart is more important than achieving fame.

“I want to make everybody feel joy, love, and peace. That’s the message I want to bring to this concert and every other concert I do,” he said. “The audience is going to feel so good, and there’s something special at the end.”

The Anthony Kawalkowski Orchestra will perform Thursday, Oct.9, at 7p.m. in the Drendel Ballroom.
