Our February story

By Dorothy Litwin

Have you noticed love is in the air? Why? Valentine’s Day is coming, and we at HCR want you to know that we love you! Yes, you, our loyal listeners. Since we now are on 101.5 FM, there are more of you to love. We keep hearing that you like our programming. That’s great.

However, if you’re a new listener, I’d like to give a brief description of who we are. Our call letters are WHRU, and you can listen on your FM dial at 101.5. In addition to listening on the air, we also simulcast on your computer or smart phone. Just go to huntleyradio.org.

We’re a public not-for-profit organization like the Red Cross or the American Cancer Society, which happen to operate a low power FM radio station. Unlike commercial stations like WGN or WBBM, we are not allowed to sell advertising, so we must depend on donations, grants sponsorships, and special events. Of course, all donations are tax deductible as we are also an IRS 501(c)(3) organization. In addition, our charter states that we will not solicit funds from any tax-supported group. The station is operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and it’s all done by volunteers. That’s our story, and we think it’s pretty remarkable.

Now for some news about our programming. Last month we introduced you to two new programs, “Financial Straight Talk’ and “Chainsaw Polka Madhouse.” Here’s the latest new program, “Music & The Message.” Ever since HRU began scheduling programs, we’ve always set aside Sunday morning in the hope that we could offer programs with spiritual content. And now we are starting. Every Sunday morning at 10 a.m., Pastor Bruce Milash of St. Peters Lutheran Church, will broadcast a half hour worship service for the benefit of our community. So remember every Sunday at 10 a.m. tune into 101.5 on your FM dial.

As the Developer of Programming, I have a list of subjects I’d like to develop into regular program, but I need help. Here is a list of some of the topics I’d like to add to our weekly schedule.

Travel, handyman, book club of the air, car talk, law and you, Spanish/Hispanic, tech talk, dietician, You’ll Never Believe My Story.

Even if you’ve never talked on the radio, if you have experience or interest in one the above categories, I’ll work with you and together we’ll create a new show Call me at 847-802-4641 or e-mail me atdorothy.litwin@huntleyradio.org for more information.

Again, Happy Valentines Day!
