Happy Grandmother’s Day

Sun City women share universal truths about being a grandma

By Kelsey O'Kelley

SUN CITY – While Mother’s Day undoubtedly grants glory to grandmothers, what exactly does it mean to be one?

The women of Sun City have the answer. According to several residents, grandmothers come with universal duties, one of which is hosting a variety of traditions.

Sue Evans, grandma of thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, shares annual summer events with her grandkids.

“We have a cabin in Wisconsin, and I see them there a lot in the summer. They love to spend time at the cabin. We always get together for the Fourth of July,” she said.

Rita Meredith, who is a grandma to twelve grandchildren and a great-grandma to five, is fortunate enough to have a weekly ritual with one of her grandchildren.

“Every Wednesday, my grandson, Tyler, comes over for lunch. He tells me what he wants, and then we cook it together in between his classes. We have fun,” she said.

For Evans, time with the grandchildren often means socializing with multiple generations of “kids.” Her oldest grandchild is 35 years old, while her youngest great grandchild is not even one year of age, prompting her to categorize them as her “old family” and “young family” of grandchildren. That’s not to mention the great grandchildren.

“They’re all different, and they’re each special to me,” she said.

Sun City resident Irma Danna also plays host to a bevy of grandchildren, boasting 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

“We’re family people,” she said, explaining that she stays in contact with her many grandchildren through frequent phone calls. “We’re closely in contact with each other. Whenever I have a need of anything, they all volunteer to help.”

The women unanimously agreed that an integral part of being a grandma is learning from their grandchildren. In Meredith’s case, her grandchildren teach her technology tips.

“Whenever my TV won’t work properly, they have to come and set it. And with my smart phone, they have to teach me, too,” said Meredith, who explained that even her six-year-old grandchildren know how to operate her phone.

Evans also learns from her grandkids.

“They always seem to want to be with me, and they all love to tease me,” she said. “They taught me love.”
