Let’s go… play tennis

By Cheryl Geier

A couple of years ago, I moved to Sun City to join my new-found love. As a bonus, I also found a wonderful environment. I knew right away that I had made the right decision to move here. I found the man of my dreams and a community that I fell in love with! My significant other really liked playing tennis, so I decided to try it on for size. Much to my amazement, I learned that I, too, was interested in the sport. My new guy worked patiently with me on how to play the game. He especially had me work on my serves (which I must admit were not very good—and, to this day, I just can’t get right). Guess I better work a little harder!

He must have given my tennis game some thought and decided that it would be a good idea for me to take lessons at the Tall Oaks Tennis Courts. I wasn’t sure if this was a good idea, but I must admit that it really helped my game. The tennis instructor was very patient and considerate of me and my rather low level of play. He really got me off the ground! To this day, I wish that I could be better at the game. But I guess that’s everyone’s dream. We can’t all be a Monica Seles!

After we got married, my husband informed me that I was ready for the big time. Join a ladies tennis team! What was he thinking…? I was not good enough for that! However, much to my surprise, I really liked the ladies league. They were all so helpful with my game, giving me great tips on how to play better, and most of all, they were not judgmental. After the games, I always felt so good when I went home and thought about how I had done and the help that I had received from the gals.

Then I joined a mixed doubles league. What a great surprise! It was so much fun! However, I had to contain myself with the joy that I was feeling and just pay attention to the game. You have to understand that you can’t joke around all the time when playing tennis because you lose your focus on the game. But I guess that is true with any game that you play! I was being too lackadaisical. It’s funny. Some players are very serious and others not so much. I learned very quickly that I had to respect the way others played their game.

Lastly, I was asked to join the Tall Oaks Tennis Club Board, which I accepted with great pride! Our Board is made up of a lot of nice people who want to promote the club. If any of you have been following the Life Styles Magazine, I hope you’ve noticed that the club has been promoting a Trial Run Program for 2015. It is for anyone who wants to learn to play tennis for the first time (like I did!) or for those who have been away from tennis for many years. You can learn the basics with lessons once a week for 8 weeks (OK, it took me a little longer). A one-year Tall Oaks Tennis Club Membership is included-all for only $30! What a deal! It all starts May 19. Come join us for a fun year!

My only hope is that many of you will take up this offer and join us! Honestly, it’s a good way to meet other people in the community, get some exercise, and learn to play the wonderful game of tennis….

GAME, SET, MATCH!

Come out and join us this year!
