Kickin’ it Old’s Cool at the new Pub 47

By TR Kerth

Ask an outsider to describe life in Sun City and they’re likely to say, “Well, they really love their rockers.” And that would be true, but not for the reason you might think.

That’s because Sun City’s favorite rockers are the five guys in the classic rock band, Old’s Cool, which has been heating up dance floors in the Chicago area since 2007.

And while the band has been getting booked over a wider and wider area lately (Chicago Loop in Streamwood on June 6, Penny Road Pub in Barrington on June 12), they’ll be coming back home to Huntley on Sunday, June 14, when Old’s Cool will play an early afternoon show at the newly opened Pub 47 from 1-4 p.m.

And that sounds like cool news for everyone.

“We always love to play in Huntley, because three of us live in Sun City,” says band leader TR Kerth (guitar, harmonica, vocals), who lives in neighborhood 17, along with Hans Stucki (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and Bob Noble (bass). Addison’s Dennis Baier (lead guitar, vocals) and Lake Geneva’s Monk Montgomery (drums, vocals) round out the band.

“Some fans travel pretty far to see us,” Kerth says, whose band last summer played as far away as the storied Empire Room in Chicago’s Palmer House. “But we get to see more of our friends when we play close to home. And if we get a good turnout at Pub 47 that day, they’d probably like to have us there on a regular basis.”

The Sunday show is part of Pub 47’s official grand opening week, even though the popular pub’s doors have been open for a few months.

The pub has already turned heads in Huntley with its diverse menu, outstanding food, and quick service, qualities that were sorely lacking at the site previously. Before, it was known as Sponsors Sports Bar and Grill, which went out of business last summer. And now that Pub 47’s owner Gordon Smith has started bringing musical entertainment to the venue, the party can really get going.

“We’re really excited about this show,” says Stucki, who along with Kerth started putting the band together back in 2004. “Because two of the guys in the band are snowbirds who just got back in town, we’re just kicking off our season. And I can’t think of a better way for our season to start than to invite our fans to have lunch with the band at Pub 47, which is just getting started in business, too.”

Everyone—the pub, the band, and the fans—hope that it’s just the start of a beautiful, long-lasting relationship.
