Huntley P.D. and H.S. discuss student parking dilemma

By Dwight Esau

SUN CIY – The problem of high school students parking on Sun City streets has escalated somewhat recently and has prompted a special meeting among students, parents, and the Huntley Police Department.

It will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, in the police department’s offices in the village hall on Main Street and Ruth Road. Representatives of Huntley School District 158 also may attend.

In recent months, a few high school students have been parking on Delaney and Messiner streets in Neighborhoods 23 and 38, and at the end of Windsor Drive in Neighborhood 28. The students then cut through Sun City properties to get to the high school campus. At a meeting in Sun City last September, Sgt. Leonard Marak of the police department said that none of the Sun City property owners had complained about the trespassing, and therefore the police had not initiated any enforcement action. He also said the police department could not stop the students from parking on roadways, as long as they did not block fire hydrants, driveways, or crosswalks.

“The roadways are public domain,” Marak explained. Dan Armstrong, director of communications for Huntley School District 158, said then that teachers and school officials were contacting the parkers and “encouraging” them not to trespass on Sun City properties. He said the situation may have started when large-scale construction activities to expand the high school building were underway and student parking was limited in the parking lots.

This situation has now changed, according to Sgt. Marak last week. He told the Sun Day that police officials have received a number of complaints from some of the community’s property owners about students cutting through their yards.

“We have talked to the students and their parents, and in some cases the offenders have cooperated,” Sgt. Marak said. “In other cases, they haven’t. This is why we have scheduled this meeting. Everyone involved in this issue needs to understand clearly what can and cannot be done on Sun City roadways and properties.”

“We allowed the kids to use the cut-throughs until the property owners complained,” Sgt. Marak added. “But now we are seeing more concern expressed by Sun City property owners. We have talked to the high school about this issue, but there also is little they can do.”
