Sun City staff changes underway

By Dwight Esau

Several more staff changes in the Sun City marketing, maintenance, and fitness departments have been announced recently by Deanna Loughran, executive director.

Jackie Shireman, director of fitness for the past nine years, is retiring to Missouri this summer. Replacing her is Kathy Kent, who started in Sun City on March 28. Kathy brings more than 20 years of land/water exercise and personal training experience to Sun City. She is the author of the book “365Fitt,” that includes a 12-week program on lifestyle fitness.

“In her spare time, Kathy ‘walks the talk,’ enjoying masters swimming, walking, hiking, cycling, and just about any activity that involves being outdoors,” said Loughran.

Shireman will remain in the department for a few more weeks to help coordinate the staffing transition. Renee Swanson, marketing manager for the past year and formerly the special events director in the former Lifestyle Department, retired in mid-April to spend more time and travel with her family.

“Renee has been a vital leader in community event planning and marketing during the last three years,” Loughran said. Swanson’s last day was April 18.

Two long-time staffers who also live in Sun City are retiring this month. Ollie Arseneau has been Lifestyle Magazine editor for almost seven years and is departing April 22. Many charter club officers will remember him as the friendly guy who helped clubs put together their “events and news” notices in the center section of the magazine.

Ron Johnston, known to many residents as the “mailbox guy,” retired April 2 from the Landscaping Department where he worked for 11 years. The Sun Day wrote a couple of years ago about his untiring efforts to repair resident mailboxes that were knocked over or damaged by storms, snowplows, or vandalism.

In her April 8 e-blast, Loughran publically thanked the retiring staff.

“We thank each of these associates for all their efforts and wish them good health, happiness, and success in their retirement,” she said.
