2016 National Night Out info

By Bob Gienko

Since 2002 Sun City, Huntley, under the sponsorship and direction of the Neighborhood Watch/Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NW/NHN) Committee, has participated in National Night Out (NNO) and is proud to again be part of this effort, our 14th year.

Officially titled National Night Out (NNO) against crime the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) will be celebrating the 33rd. annual National Night Out (NNO) crime prevention event. Over 38.1 million people in more than 16,520 communities will join forces on AUGUST 2 to promote Police/Community partnership, crime, drug, violence prevention, safety issues and neighborhood unity.

Throughout the year NW/NHN Committee keeps actively involved with Sun City residents and the Huntley Police and Fire Department with articles in the Life Styles magazine and Sun Day newspaper as well as personal contact with community members in keeping with our NHN commitments. Last year we developed a new NW/NHN brochure that will again be distributed at all neighborhood meetings, NW/NHN functions as well as this year’s NNO.

It contains a short background of NW and many safety and security hints, important phone numbers, support information, general well being hints and agencies supporting Sun City.

Sun City NNO event will take on a new look for 2016. We are excited to be welcoming back old friends and well as new ones to help with this celebration. We will begin on AUGUST 2 at 3:30 p.m. at Eakin Field with the presentation of colors by the Sun City Marine Color Guard, Richard Christie commandant, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by the Sun City Sun Tones. The following are some of the highlights of activities that are planned.

A six (6) inning soft ball game beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Eakin field. This game is a NEW addition to NNO that was developed last year. The teams will consist of our proud Huntley Police and Fire Departments first responders.

Heartland Bank Huntley will once again sponsor the musical portion of this event. This will be their second year sponsorship and is greatly appreciated. Beginning at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. will be our own Sun City 18 piece “Let’s Dance” band. A traditional “big band” sound specializing in all types of dance music from the 40s and 50s under the direction of Donna Bressler. From “Moonlight Serenade” to “Bad Bad Leroy Brown” come listen and dance to the contagious energy of Sun City’s own dance band.

Sara Mitchell Reality will graciously provide free hot dogs, chips and water from 4:30 p.m. until the supply is gone. This will be Sara Mitchell’s second year of participation with NNO and their commitment to our Sun City community is most appreciated.

The Huntley Fire Department will have a Fire Truck and Ambulance at the event for the kids as well as adults to enjoy.

NW/NHN will have a table with handouts on the “Yellow Dot Program”, File of Life, and as previously mentioned a “New” brochure. We are very grateful for all the hard work and commitment put forth by Joan McClellan and Phyllis James with input by Bob Gienko in bringing this project to fruition. This was an enormous task and a job well done. We will also be selling raffle tickets for cash prizes. This is NW/NHN only fundraiser so please be generous with your donation.

Sun City Model Railroad Club will again be running trains during the festivities which can be enjoyed by young and old alike.

The Knights of Columbus from Saint Mary’s Parish of Huntley have donated ice cream bars and will be passing them out at the event. We are very grateful to all the volunteers from K of C for their participation. It is greatly appreciated.

Also on hand will be dignitaries (TBA) as in years past. Unfortunately they cannot be listed here due to the early time line of this article.

In the event of rain the festivities will be moved to Drendel Hall. Remember to bring a lawn chair for the music part of this event as they will perform in the parking area of Eakin field.

The NW/NHN is also in need of additional sponsors and/or volunteers for this as well as future events. If interested please call our President Jim Uszler at 224-392-3140.
