A Grand Slam Breakfast “Slam”

By Jim & Nancy Eggers

Jim and Nancy do not disclose the fact that they will review a restaurant before they attend, ensuring their reviews are unbiased and uninfluenced by their position with the Sun Day.

There is an old saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” As we get older, doesn’t that seem to be the case? It is a proven scientific fact that time does seem to go faster as you get older. Having said this, welcome to our post Fourth of July article! We are celebrating it at our new Denny’s Restaurant aka “America’s Diner” at Drendel’s Corner.

We were wondering how they were going to transform the old Culver’s into a sit down diner. As it turns out, they did a great job. The counter where you previously placed and picked up your order is now counter seating, all seven chairs. Behind the counter, there is a nostalgic lit up sign that makes it feel like a diner. They have tables of all shapes and sizes to accommodate any size party.

Denny’s is known for their “Special Slam Breakfasts” throughout the year. Jim ordered the Red, White, and Blue Slam ($7.59) for the Fourth of July. This holiday treat was two eggs, hash browns, and either two strips of bacon or 2 sausage links, accompanied by two blueberry pancakes topped with strawberries and drizzled with white cream cheese icing. Red, white, and blue, get it??? When the waitress placed it front of him on the table, he felt almost obligated to stand up and put his hand over his heart.

Nancy spotted something sweet and spicy, just like she is, and decided she had to try the Honey Jalapeno Bacon Slam ($7.49). This consisted of two eggs, two pancakes, hash browns, and two strips of thick cut honey jalapeno infused bacon. Yum…Her eyes bugged out after taking her first bite, and she said, “That’s a spicy bacon.”

Our minds went into overdrive while we were sitting there enjoying our breakfast. We came up with some new “Slams” that the Denny’s Corporation may want to consider. These include the Santa Slam. The Easter Bunny Slam. The Rosh Hashanah Slam. The Kwanzaa Slam. The May Day Slam. The Cinco de Mayo Slam. And the not to be forgotten, Sadie Hawkins Day Slam. We do have two very good ideas for a Dining Duo Slam. Jim’s would be anything that included the cheddar bacon tater tots and the maple bacon ice cream sundae. Nancy’s perfect slam would be any slam on the menu, and then she would change every ingredient to what suits her taste at the moment.

To sum it all up, our holiday breakfasts were delicious. The pancakes were light and fluffy and the hash browns were made the way we like them, shredded and crunchy. The eggs were cooked perfectly to the strict Dining Duo standards.

Dining Duo Tips: Look for the money off coupons. If you can’t find any, show your AARP card for a 15% discount, in lieu of a Senior Citizen discount. Get your morning coffee for free by purchasing a Denny’s coffee mug for $6 and receive free coffee for one whole month.

FYI: Handicap accessible. You can even call in an order and pick it up at the drive through window.

The price for our “Slammin’” good breakfast was $21.10.

Jim’s take: I don’t normally go for these breakfast gimmicks, but this was really delicious. I can’t wait to try their maple bacon sundae.

Nancy’s take: That bacon was awesome; it woke me up with the unexpected kick. I loved their pancakes, always have and always will.
