Despite push for more candidates, board elections uncontested for second straight year

By Dwight Esau

For the second straight year, there will be no competition in the 2016 Sun City board of directors election.

After major efforts by the association staff to increase the number of volunteers to be candidates for open board positions, there are exactly four candidates for the four open positions this year. The deadline for receipt of applications was July 18.

Sun City’s bylaws, Article III, state: “An uncontested election shall be defined as an election where there are only the same or fewer number of candidates as there are vacancies on the board to be filled….The candidates shall be considered elected by acclamation and no voting by ballot or any other means shall be conducted by the association.”

The candidates are Dennis O’Leary, current board president who is seeking re-election, and newcomers Marilynn Berendt, Bob McGouey, and James Lunn. They will begin their two-year terms for 2017-18 on Jan. 1, 2017. Retiring from the board this year are Bill Bendick, Bill Berendt, and Ken Andersen. Holdover board members for 2017 are Bonnie Bayser, Linda Davis, and Steve Bytnar.

Dennis O’Leary has served one term on the board and has served as president since Jan. 1, 2016. He served in various corporate management and finance positions before coming to Sun City, and has served previously on both the Finance and Facility Advisory Committees.

Marilynn Berendt is the wife of retiring board member Bill Berendt, and currently is the chairperson of Sun City’s Neighborhood Advisory Council. She has served as the rep, and on various committees, for Neighborhood 10 for several years.

Bob McGouey served as a member and chairman of the Finance Advisory Committee in 2014-15.

James Lunn bought a home in Sun City in 2000 and has been a full-time resident of the community since 2005. He has participated in the Prairie Singers, the Neighborhood Advisory Council, served as a neighborhood rep, and has provided a variety of graphic arts services to staff departments and charter clubs. He has more than 30 years experience in the real estate, land development, and building construction fields.

Moe information on the candidates’ career and Sun City backgrounds, together with their views on the issues and challenges in the community, will be published in future issues of the Sun Day.
