Meadowview retention wall among list of repairs approved by board

By Dwight Esau

Maintenance projects and Meadow View Lodge fitness center hours were the main topics discussed by the Sun City board of directors on September 7.

After several months of discussion and study, the board agreed with Anglers Club members and voted to install gravel (called fines) along the eastern shoreline of Wildflower Lake. The purpose is to smooth out and stabilize the rocky areas near the water’s edge, where “rip rap,” or larger rocks, have been placed to prevent erosion of the shoreline.

This project needs the approval of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has authority over projects on waterways and rivers. The work will be done by Hay & Associates at a cost of about $10,000. The installation of gravel was actually started near the fishing dock a few years ago and now will be extended along the entire eastern edge of the lake. The project will be completed either this fall or next spring, depending on the timing of Corps of Engineers approval.

In another major project, the board moved forward on a plan to repair the retaining wall in front of the Meadow View Lodge main entrance, at a cost of $65,000. This was the low bid of several bids by contractors. The work will be done this fall by Landscape Concepts.

In a related action at Meadow View, the board approved a recommendation by Fitness Director Kathy Kent to extend the lodge’s fitness hours in the mornings from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. Kent said the 5:30 a.m. opening time was tried as an experiment this summer and was favorably received by fitness center users.

“We had 20-25 residents come at the earlier time and we actually had about half-a-dozen new people come,” Kent said. The board also approved a $22,200 project to replace fluorescent lights with LED ones on landscaped signs along Del Webb Boulevard. The work is being done by Moonscape & Landscape Illuminations.

Finally, residents have probably noticed that the parking lot next to the comfort station at Wildflower Park has been rebuilt, repaved, and re-striped.
