Laced dog treats in areas near Sun City spark concern

By Kelsey O'Kelley

A recent dog treat scare in areas surrounding Sun City has raised concerns for residents and their canine companions in Del Webb.

On November 19, a resident on the 2500 block of Fallbrook in Hampsire, Illinois, discovered a strange item on the sidewalk: a slice of deli meat wrapped around peanut butter and several nails, according to a Hampshire Police Department Facebook post. The Hampshire police also mentioned that a similar incident might have occurred on Rockport Road in Hampshire as well.

This is important for Sun City residents, since this area of Hampshire brushes up against parts of Sun City.

A Heart for Animals shelter in Huntley also posted about the incident, stating that a resident of Hampshire was able to remove the laced treat from his dog’s mouth in time.

In addition for being aware of potential traps disguised as treats, Sun City residents can take extra precautions during this time, according to Karen Larson, practice manager at Pet Vet in Huntley.

She recommends keeping dogs on shorter leashes in order to be aware of the dog’s surroundings.

Larson also recommends paying attention to any sickness warning signs, which can vary greatly.

“Look for any number of symptoms, like vomiting and diarrhea. It could even be as simple as lethargy,” said Larson.

Larson also warned that if a pet is exhibiting concerning symptoms, it’s better to play it safe.

“Contact a vet sooner versus later,” she said.
