Moen faucets

By The Woodchucks

We told you about the manufacturer’s warranty on the windows in your house but did you know that if you have Moen faucets they are also warranted? Moen has a lifetime warranty on their faucets to the original owner, and not just in senior communities. Below is an extract from the warranty:

Moen warrants to the original consumer purchaser for as long as the original consumer purchaser owns their home (the “Warranty Period” for homeowners), that this faucet will be leak and drip-free during normal use and all parts and finishes of this faucet will be free from defects in material and manufacturing workmanship.

If this faucet should ever develop a leak or drip during the Warranty Period, Moen will FREE OF CHARGE provide the parts necessary to put the faucet back in good working condition and will replace FREE OF CHARGE any part or finish that proves defective in material and manufacturing workmanship, under normal installation, use and service. Replacement parts may be obtained by calling 1-800-289-6636. Proof of purchase (original sales receipt) from the original consumer purchaser must accompany all warranty claims. Defects or damage caused by the use of other than genuine Moen parts is not covered by this warranty. This warranty is applicable only to faucets purchased after December 1995 and shall be effective from the date of purchase as shown on purchaser’s receipt.

If your Moen faucet fails, you can contact Moen at 1-800-BUY-MOEN or on their web site: www.Moen.com. You will need your model number to properly explain your problem. You can get the model number from the instruction paperwork. It is usually at the base of the spout or you can remove the cap to see it. If you still need help take a digital photo of your faucet and go to the Moen web site and click on Consumer Support and then click on contact us. Fill out the form and attach your photo. They will get back to you within 48 hours with your model number.

Once you have your model number, call the Moen 800 number. They will ask you a few questions to help diagnose the source of the leak. If they conclude that your faucet has a major failure, such as a cracked housing, they will send you a whole new faucet. You can then install the new faucet yourself or have a plumber install it. Before you decide to install the faucet yourself, look at the installation video on the Moen web site. It is very clear and will help you evaluate if you have the skill to do the installation.

A more likely scenario is that they will decide you need a couple of parts and they will send them to you. Ninety percent of the time when a faucet leaks, the problem is the cartridge or an ‘O’ ring. You can either install these parts yourself or have a plumber install them. To help you decide if you have the skill to rebuild your faucet, go to the Moen web site. Click on Consumer Support and then click on installation help. They have very good drawings and instruction on installing parts including the cartridge.

If you call a plumber before calling Moen and he diagnoses your problem as a cartridge or ‘O’ rings you are probably better paying him for the parts (about $20 for a cartridge and $2 for ‘O’ rings) and let him fix the faucet in one service call. If you want to get these parts through your warranty and have your plumber make another service call to install them your total cost will be higher.

The Moen lifetime warranty can save you money if your faucet fails but be sure to contact them first when you spot a problem.

If you have suggestions for future tips or have questions about maintenance around your home submit them to ask.the.woodchucks@gmail.com.
