Practicing extravagant tap dancing, incorporating live music, and sustaining a vibrant crew and cast, the Theatre Company of Sun City is as determined as Millie herself as they take on their spring production.
Thoroughly Modern Millie follows the story of Millie, a young woman who moves to New York to pursue both show business and wealthy, eligible bachelors. She sheds her small-town look and becomes entrenched in the culture of 1920s New York City.
According to co-producer Karen Gienko, the Theatre Company of Sun City has embarked on one of its most challenging productions yet.

But what makes Millie so different?
“A lot of tap dancing,” said Nancy Cichon, also a co-producer of the show. “More dancing than any of the other shows we’ve done.”
The cast has been working with professional choreographers in rehearsals in order to master the dances.
“It’s been a challenge, and they have put a lot of work into the tap dancing. It really shows,” said Gienko.
Although the talent and practice required for the on-stage members of the show is noteworthy, Gienko and Cichon stress that the 75 behind-the-scenes crew are the unsung heroes.

“When you think of a show, you have to also think of the crew,” Gienko said. Because the show is set in 1920s New York, crew members researched and collected costumes, makeup, props, and scenery techniques to bring the flapper era to life. A nine-piece orchestra also provides musical magic for the show.
It is through the challenges, both on and off stage, that the cast and crew of Millie have become close with one another.
“We’re like one big family, and this kind of friendship is for life,” said Gienko.

What can audiences anticipate?
“The tapping and singing will wow you,” said Cichon. “The audience might be amazed by what senior citizens can do.”
Thoroughly Modern Millie performs in Drendel Ballroom on April 27 and 28 at 7 p.m., April 29 at 3 p.m., and April 30 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.
