Ask an Angel: May 4, 2017

By Arlene Petersen

Our Ask An Angel correspondent is Arlene Petersen, Life Care Navigation Specialist in the area of senior home care.

Q. It is time for me to turn in my keys. That’s what my kids recommend. I can’t fathom this and while I know they are right, I am fighting this all the way. What do people do in this situation?

A. Driving is truly an activity that keeps us independent. We know how difficult it is to let go of the keys and as I work with many families, this is the most contentious topic for many. Driving limitations begin when we avoid nighttime driving. That’s a sign that perhaps, sometime in the future, we may be limited altogether from driving. The simple fact is we want to be mobile. We want to be able to pick up and go whenever we need to or want to. So, when ceasing to drive becomes a reality, alternatives need to be in place. Just because you don’t have keys, doesn’t mean life will become difficult. It will become different! So, what can you do? Start checking with your local services such as PACE bus service to see what schedules they have in your area. That may be the most economical option for you. Many people have been using services such as Uber or Lyft to take them here and there. Uber is a taxi alternative and many say offers reasonable prices. Some Senior Services offices have volunteer drivers, but make sure you investigate as it may take time to schedule a driver to take you to an appointment. Home care agencies can assist by providing transportation as part of their services. If coupled with the other services they provide, this may be an excellent option. Consider that while driving may now be limited, there are some benefits that include saving the cost of insurance, maintenance, and fuel costs. Those costs should be weighed against the cost of using other services out there. All in all, be encouraged! There are viable options out there for you.
