Skye is a place, not a person. Intriguing cover art enticed me to read the inside flap. The story is revealed through an exchange of letters between two sets of people during two different world wars on different continents.

A Chicago friend recommended this book, a combination biography, mystery, newspaper story, myth-buster. The author was 6 when his young, Chicago newspaper-man father died late one night of a heart attack, after work, after visiting friends in 1970.

Such a title begs investigation. Which book matters most? By whose judgment? The story, according to the inside flap, involves a woman whose 25 year marriage has fallen apart who joins a book club to meet new people.

This title made me think of my brother’s dining room table spread full with 50 years’ worth of family pictures. He, too, wonders about some unidentified people as does a character in this novel.

Next time a snowstorm heads our way, get this hefty book for your days inside. It’s not about a lawyer, but if you grew up in Chicago or are interested in contemporary history and/or in the history of the print journalism, this might be just for you.

I’m reusing last year’s resolution to cook a company meal once a month. This item from our prolific cookbook section ought to help.

A well-received contribution to any potluck or picnic, in my experience, is deviled eggs. I still use a basic recipe from my 50-year-old Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. So, when I saw this book, I had to have it.

This looks like a fun book for tweens, published by Dorling Kindersley, a well-known name in the school library reference world. Huge print, many pictures, and colorful sidebars will be attractive even to reluctant readers.

  • Check These Out: November 17, 2016

This is another book I sought after hearing the NY Times best-selling author interviewed on WGN radio. He spoke about the creation of the first Japanese transistor radio which led to the Sony Corporation.

  • Check These Out: November 3, 2016

This is a book I went looking for because my brother and I stopped in Winterset, IA on our recent road trip to see the birthplace of THE DUKE.

Who hasn’t dreamed about an island vacation? I was surprised to see an entire magazine on the topic. Evidently, many people must do more than dream. Every issue of Islands magazine provides a nearly unlimited number of island destinations. Editors aim to make it simple to pick the best vacation based on your needs and desires.

You may want to skim this book while considering it as a gift for someone you know who is constantly focused on their cell phone, unable to string together two sentences together without saying “um, like…awesome.”

  • Check These Out: September 22, 2016

This is a book I went looking for since I heard the author interviewed on NPR. The main character is diabetic, which has nothing do to with the plot; he simply thought it would be interesting to give her this attribute.

As previously mentioned, the Huntley Library has hundreds of cookbooks. This one, from the NEW shelf, caught my eye because of the colorful cover, its Sports Illustrated connection, plus a mixture of simple recipes with short, interesting ballpark factoids.

For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.

On the NEW bookshelves is a non-fiction item that appeals to me because it has (as you can tell from the title) many pictures and not too much text. I used to tell my high school students that an easy way to keep up with current events, so as not to appear totally ignorant, was to browse through a weekly news magazine and look at the pictures, and read the captions.

Today found me in the Biography section which, by the way, is enormous. Because early June will bring a Kenny Rogers personality/tribute band to Sun City, I thought I’d check out his 2012 memoir to see if I can gain a bit of insight to some of his songs.

This is a book I went looking for after a fascinating LLL presentation at Prairie Lodge. The topic was Huntley dairy farm history. One of the 3 speakers is also author of a book on Huntley history, and the pictures in her fine presentation were only a portion of the many in her book.

  • Check These Out: April 7, 2016

My shelving cart had three books with “rain” in the title and/or pictured on the cover; reason enough to examine them more closely. I realized that I’d read one of them already and given it high marks for an intriguing plot with good writing. Author Deb Caletti says the idea came to her one morning when she overslept and woke to wonder if her husband was still home.

  • From murder mysteries to HGTV

The word ‘forensic’ was on the cover of a 2015 novel titled THE SILENCE THAT SPEAKS and I usually like mysteries solved through some scientific hoopla.

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? How do you like this title? “What do I do if…? How to get out of real-life worst-case scenarios.” Who doesn’t need this book?
