Manicures, pedicures, house calls, Berger does it all

By Kay Clark

Let’s say you just received an invitation to a luncheon with the ladies, and with all the rain feeding your outdoor plants for the past week, you’ve spent the last few days weeding, and your nails are a fright? Who do you call? Mary Berger! You know she does a great job because 90% of her clients are from Sun City, and she gets much of her business from referrals.

Mary has been giving manicures and pedicures for years now. She’s even taught her daughter how to give manicures. After her divorce many years ago, she moved in with her mother and enrolled in cosmetology school.

“I had to support myself and my three children,” Berger said.

Mary worked for six weeks in a beauty shop doing nails and hair and soon discovered she preferred working with nails. She then went to her sister’s beauty shop in Lincolnwood and worked there only doing nails. When her sister moved to Florida, she moved to a men’s hair styling shop, also located in Lincolnwood, where she worked for ten years. Then, for the next decade, Mary worked in a beauty shop doing men’s and women’s nails. From there, she worked in a few other shops before landing at the shop in Huntley, called Hairdoos, where she works about 20-22 hours a week, scheduling her appointments on Fridays, Saturdays, and Tuesdays.

Mary has spent the last five years working at Hairdoos and really enjoys the atmosphere and working with her clients and the staff.

“I love to visit with the people,” she said. She also works out of her home, and if someone is housebound or finds it difficult making it into the shop, she will graciously go to their homes and service them there.

“People who can’t make it, I go to them,” Berger said. She has a map of the Del Webb community and can pretty well locate most everyone needing a manicure. “I will even go to nursing homes,” she said.

If you would like schedule an appointment with Mary or find out more information, she can be reached at 847-658-2734.
