Honoring the legacy

By Brad Wagner

SUN CITY – “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’ I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood,” said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his speech “I have a Dream.”

On Monday, January 17 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the main lobby of Prairie Lodge, Gloria Readus of N.17 will be honoring Dr. King with a display of his amazing life. “The display will focus on [Dr. King’s life] from the time he got involved [with the civil rights movement] up until his death,” said Readus.

The display will include visuals from the demonstrations as well as biographical pictures of Dr. King’s life and pictures of his children.

“It is a beautiful display,” said Readus.

Dr. King holds a special place in Readus’ life. “I was a part of the movement…. I actually saw him [Dr. King] in person.”

This is the third time Readus has presented the display in Sun City, and she plans to keep doing it.

“I’m a teacher … [I want to] pass the legacy on to my family…. It’s the legacy that I would like to pass down to all generations of children,” said Readus.

Readus’ personal experiences with the civil rights movement and Dr. King go hand in hand with her love of history.

“History is the love of my life,” said Readus. “History means his-story or her-story … it’s a legacy that I love,” said Readus.

If you also love history or simply want to pay your respects to Dr. King, then head on down to Prairie Lodge and take a walk down memory lane with Gloria Readus’ wonderful homage to Dr. King.

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically … intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education,” said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
