Stingrays successful at Senior Olympics

Highly successful swim performances were given by the eight Stingray tankers who attended this year’s Six County Senior Olympics Swim Meet. The meet was held at Maine East High School, Park Ridge, on July 21. A total of 19 medals, 13 gold, and 6 silver were earned by the Sun City participants who each swam in their own respective age category. Top performers were Len Lencioni and Caryl Fabian. Len was a winner of 5 gold medals in the 50 yd., 100 yd., 200 yd. freestyle events and 100 yd. IM and 50 yd. breaststroke events. Caryl Fabian earned 4 gold medals in the 50 yd., 100 yd., 200 yd. freestyle events, and 50 yd. breaststroke. Ginny McCann continued the Stings’ winning ways by capturing three gold medals in the 50 yd. backstroke, the 50 yd. breaststroke, and the 100 yd. IM. Joan Souchek, Joe Loughlin, and Joanie Koplos all won two medals with one gold and one silver win for each swimmer. Joan earned a gold in the 50 yd. freestyle and a silver in the 50 yd. backstroke. Joe went home with a gold in the 50 yd. breaststroke and a silver in the 100 yd. freestyle. Joanie took a gold in the 200 yd. freestyle and a silver in the 100 yd. freestyle. Margarete Liedtke won three second place finishes in the 50 yd. freestyle, the 50 yd. backstroke, and the 50 yd. breaststroke. Art Fitzgerald earned a gold in the 100 yd. freestyle.

The Six County Senior Olympic Track Meet, which was to have been held in the morning hours of July 21, was cancelled due to extremely hot temperatures. Rescheduled for the July 27, rain and high winds caused postponement of most events that day. However, Sun City’s husband-and-wife team Nick and Joanie Koplos were able to complete their first events. Nick took a gold in the three-mile run in his age category. Joanie earned a gold in the one-mile race walk for her 5-year age increment.
