Dancin’ in the street

By Kay Clark

SUN CITY – About nine years ago, Sandy Oldham (N. 12) started a dance group that today has grown to 77-80 Sun City residents. They are known as the Hoofers and Hunks and will present their 9th Annual Show at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, October 2 and 7 p.m. Monday, October 3 in Drendel Ballroom. Sunday performances are all sold out, but you may still purchase tickets from Sandy for the Monday performance. Tickets for the show are $4. Call Sandy Oldham for ticket information at 847-961-6476.

In preparation for their upcoming revue, the group practices twice a week for a total of two-and-a-half hours. There are other dance teachers who assist Sandy in putting these performances together.

Choosing the routines, Sandy commented, “is a creative process, and then selecting the music. I visualize the costumes and steps to the music.”

The members of the dance group sew their own costumes and spend many hours gluing sequins, fringe, and fabric, even though most of the glue ends up on the dancers.

This year’s show opens with “Dancing in the Street.” They won’t be dancing in the street but have danced on many different occasions. They have performed for National Tap Dance Day in Chicago, the Cystic Fibrosis Run, and many special birthday parties. This year’s show will feature dances “Expressing Yourself,” “Diamonds,” “Devils,” and “Poison Ivy.” There will be a wide variety of dance styles to entertain the audience. Add the all men’s group, The Hunks, and you will be sure to see some unexpected humor in the show.
