The cure for primary fever: Thinking locally

By My Sunday News

For the last several months, we’ve all been overrun with talk, news articles, meetings, campaign telephone calls, and the like touting the presidential primary elections. Who is in the lead in the Republican Party? That is very important, but apparently not something that Sun City residents will have much effect upon. Illinois is the 31st state to hold a primary election or a party caucus. By March 20, the Presidential candidate issue will likely be pretty well decided.

So, what should we focus on? For District 14, Sun City, and all Huntley residents, the most important issue will be who are selected in the primary to be the November candidates to be our congressional representatives. Will it be Mister Anderson or Mister Farnick for the Democrats? It appears that Randy Hultgren will be the candidate for the Republicans. So, where do we need to get involved? And what about the similar primary races in surrounding districts? We need to decide how to support those candidates who will best serve our interests in Congress.

So, can we work outside our own Congressional District to help other friends of the Senior Community get elected as a Congressional Representative? Yes, we can! There are several important races in the area near to Huntley. In the 8th District, it is important to supporters of fair treatment for seniors to back an effective candidate to oppose extreme right-wing candidates. Huntley seniors can volunteer to help the Democratic candidates through telephone calls, door to door contacting, and office work.

If there is to be any progress toward solving our present problems, it is necessary for President Obama to have a Congress that will work with him and not one that opposes his every attempt to address the problems effectively. So, Huntley Seniors for Progressive Action encourages all Huntley seniors to get out and work to help elect a Congress that will work with, not oppose, the executive branch of our federal government.
