Why doesn’t the Village of Huntley stay out of our private business?

Since deregulation came into effect, various electric suppliers are soliciting Com Ed customers to switch. The Village of Huntley trustees cut a deal with Direct Energy Services, LLC and apparently there was a referendum in late winter when many residents were away. The only real notice I received was from Com Ed who advised me that my electric supplier was now to be Direct Energy Services, LLC. When I called Direct Energy Services to have them cancel and return me back to Com Ed, the fun started.

After a 35-minute wait, a customer service rep in Massachusetts who works for a company that Direct Energy Services outsources to gave me a lecture on why I shouldn’t cancel and said he could not cancel me without some kind of a “number” on a Direct Energy letter they supposedly sent some time ago.

It took me a total of 50 minutes and a lot of aggravation to complete my cancellation request after getting to a supervisor. A week later I contacted Com Ed and they advised that no such cancellation was submitted to them even though I had the confirmation number, etc.

After more frustrating phone calls, I finally contacted the Illinois Commerce Commission at 1-800-524-0795 and they resolved the matter immediately and I am back with Com Ed.

I don’t want the Village of Huntley trustees making any decisions for me without my signature allowing and accepting any change.

A Healthier You by Norma Thompson

I want to thank the Sun Day for printing these very informative articles by Norma Thompson. Sometimes we do not want to know the truth, that we as seniors are being over medicated with prescription drugs by doctors. But it is a fact. Norma’s articles are right on about cholesterol and cholesterol lowering drugs. Since these drugs have been on the market, heart disease has been on the increase. It is now our number one killer. We can all learn the truth by attending one of her summer classes. Thank you Norma.

Betty Barnett

This letter is in response to Betty Barnett’s Hang Your Hat letter which appeared in the Sun Day’s July 12 edition. I totally disagree with Mr. Barnett’s opinion that “the Sun Day should think about making it their policy not to print letters of any kind that are not signed.” Also, her statement “sign your name or shame on you” is way off base. No name should be attached to unsigned letters and treated equally with signed ones. Why do I feel this way? Read on.

First, your newspaper’s editorial management team has rules which govern letter content. This eliminates obscenities, rants, etc. So this issue will not be discussed further.

Second, we live in a world where many people are self-centered especially in their thinking. Being close-minded, they resent any other views by others; their way is the only way. Some of these people may even resort to various degrees of aggression if any issue involved is very controversial.

Third, with the above in mind, signing a letter can open up the writer to harassment, social ostracism, etc. How can this be applied to Sun City Huntley? Well the Sun City community Association of Huntley publishes a yearly resident handbook and telephone directory. This lists a resident’s address and land phone number. Many neighborhoods periodically publish their own neighborhood phone directories which not only lists residents’ addresses and land phone numbers but for some their cell phone numbers/email addresses. A signed letter becomes subject to this scrutiny.

In closing, I would like to make the following points. There is no shame to an anonymous letter. Unsigned letters should be treated the same way as signed ones. Unsigned letters provide an additional resource into a community’s residential thinking that may not be made known otherwise. Anonymity coupled with common sense writing can be an important communication tool. It is an aid to disciplined free speech. I hop eth editorial management at Sun Day feels the same way. Thank you.
