The Legends bring summer back to Sun City

By Brad Wagner

SUN CITY – Come January, Sun City may be awash in snow, but there will be an oasis for frozen residents: Drendel Hall.

On Jan. 9, Drendel Hall will not just have the heat up, but it will be the site of a beach party, taking residents back to the sights and sounds of the summer with a concert by The Legends.

After all their years of rocking, The Legends still feature two original members: Tim Kennedy and Jay Slowick. Ken Overbey, lead vocals for The Legends, has been a key member for the past several years.

“The band how it is now is just kind of a change over the years, over time things change . . . guys retire or move out of town,” said Overbey.

Most of the band members have been musicians off and on since about middle school. Keyboardist Ralph Schumann cut his teeth playing in churches.

Despite having been around for years, The Legends aim to keep their performances fresh.

“It’s the same feel, the same music. We keep the band going,” said Overbey.

The Legends are renowned for playing some of the best music from the 60’s and 70’s. They’ve focused on this era because it was a time when music was fun.

“When you hear a Beach Boys song, you want to smile; when you hear “Wooly Bully,” you want to get up and dance. It’s fun music, it’s a good-feel time,” said Overbey. “I love seeing people sing along to the oldies . . . and to hear the Vietnam Vets [say that they] related to the ’60s.”

The Legends are versatile, incorporating a wide variety of music from their chosen era.

The Legends will be bringing a beach party to Sun City on Jan 9. Get ready to be transported back to a time when music was just pure fun.

“We want [you] to hear music that [you] haven’t heard in a while . . . music [just] isn’t like this anymore,” said Overbey.
