Garden Club hosts tour of Sun City’s greenest gardens

By Christa Knight

SUN CITY — It’s that time of year. There is no longer a need to be stuck inside because of the weather. The sun is shining, the grass is bright green, and the flowers are in bloom. It’s time to grab your sunglasses and head outside.

Each year the Sun City’s Sunflower Garden Club hosts a garden walk for all Sun City residents and their friends and family.

This year’s garden walk will showcase 13 diverse gardens. The walk will demonstrate plants that survive in different environments and they will be planted near different kinds of bushes and trees in order to showcase their true beauty.

Pat McMahon is a chairperson of the Sunflower Garden Club and is extremely excited about this year’s event, which will take place on Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Our gardeners created an atmosphere of lush abundance by choosing plants that thrive in sun or shade,” McMahon said. “Grassy paths framed by foliage selected for form and texture are featured along with annuals and perennials in all sizes, shapes, and colors,” she added.

Since this is an annual event, the gardeners decide on new and unique ideas each year to focus on.

“A special feature this year is the castor oil plant that is unique to our area,” McMahon said.

According to McMahon, other features at this year’s event include: stepping stone paths with colorful ground covers, a 6-foot high mandevilla vine, flowering vines, multicolored sweet potato vines, purple fountain grasses, ponds with waterfalls and fish, and much more.

Tickets for the walk are $5 and include a free ticket for the raffle at the Railroad Garden. Anyone that enters the raffle has a chance of winning one out of the four baskets with themes of: garden, kitchen, coffee/tea, and spa.

Complimentary refreshments will be served at the Railroad Garden as well from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

“Every gardener should remember that even the experts can be challenged,” McMahon said. “Here, there’s fun in gardening; the green thumb gets muddy and everything that grows teaches us all.”
