Neighbors Helping Neighbors 10/24/13

By Robert Gienko

It has been proven the best chance for surviving a serious car crash (with injuries) happens when the injured are treated as soon as possible. Hopefully within an hour of occurrence, known as the “Golden Hour,” when seconds count.

The Yellow Dot program was initially developed by the State of Connecticut in 2002 and has since been adopted by several more states. It is projected to be adopted by all 50 states in the near future.

This initiative mirrors the File of Life information form that should be placed on your refrigerator. It allows the first responders to provide faster, more effective care based on the important information the dot provides.

As outlined in the Illinois Department of Transportation Illinois Yellow Dot Program, you will need the following:

Any recent photo of the participant (head and shoulder image). It must be placed in the designated spot on the yellow dot medical card.

Personal information. This is self-explanatory and outlined in the medical card you receive. Completed forms can then be placed in your glove compartment. If there is another regular driver and/or regular passenger, complete additional medical cards.

The “Yellow Dot.” This decal must be placed on the rear window on the driver’s side, not side windows. In doing this, it alerts the first responders of your medical history and greatly aids in your treatment.

For more information and to locate the nearest Yellow Dot Distribution Center go to www.yellowdotillinois.org.

For those of us living in Sun City, the forms are available at the CAM desk.
