Coconut oil for skin and hair care

By Norma Thompson

Please consult your doctor or regular health physician before following suggestions found in any Sun Day health columns/stories

We have talked about the importance of fats for the inside of the body, but we need to think of the skin. The skin is the largest and thinnest organ in the body. Only 1/10 inch separates you from toxins.

The skin is highly permeable and what you put on it goes directly into the bloodstream and finds its way to the liver. We don’t give a second thought as to what we lather all over our skin and hair including soaps, lotions, and sunscreen protection.

Most skin care products – even the very expensive ones – are very dangerous and made of chemicals. Some ingredients you should avoid are parabins, mineral oil, paraffin, petroleum, toluene, sodium, laurel, laurel sulfate dioxin, propylene glycol oil, phenol carbolic acid, etc. Read all labels and ingredients on the skin care products that you buy. I use Tropical Traditions and Dr. Mercola’s skin care products. All of these clean nourish, and protect the skin.

I recommend coconut oil as a remedy for:
Sun burn and natural tanning oil
Skin fungus (athletes foot, jock itch, and itchy skin)
Cuts and wounds
Skin rashes (Eczema, psoriasis, diaper rash)
Insect bites and stings (bee, fire ants, mosquitoes, spider bites)
Also rub it into your hair for healthy hair and scalp.

A wonderful book is “Coconut Cures: Preventing and Treating Common Health Problems with Coconut” by Bruce Fife, N.D. Another one is “Virgin Coconut Oil” by Brian and Marianita Shilhavy, available on the Tropical Traditions website on how to use coconut with many testimonies and over 50 recipes using coconut products.
