The problem with grains and sugar

By Norma Thompson

The following information does not necessarily share the views of the medical establishment. I have used material from the following: Dr. Richard Johnson, M.D., author of “The Fat Switch;” Bruce Fife, author of “Eat Fat, Look Thin;” Johnny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S; David Perlmutter, M.D., a board certified neurologist; Gary Taubes, author of “Good Calories, Bad Calories;” and Dr. Joseph Mercola, M.D.

They are all nutritionists, naturopaths, and doctors practicing integrative and functional medicine. I also share their values and teach them in my classes. Often they take their clients off wheat, dairy, and sugar. Many of their patients experience a wide variety of relief from unwanted fat loss and bloat as well as a multitude of other symptoms.

Insulin is known as the master hormone of human metabolism and is produced by the pancreas. It affects every cell in the human body and without it one would die. When one eats carbohydrates, which include sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and grains, glucose is released into the bloodstream. This signals the pancreas to produce insulin.

Insulin takes some of the glucose to the cells for immediate energy. It converts the rest to glycogen stored in the liver until needed; the overflow is changed to triglycerides (body fat), which circulates in the blood and is stored as adipose tissue or excess fat on the body. It is interesting to note that farmers use corn and other grains to fatten their cattle for market.

Another problem with sugar and grains is that they are addictive. The choice is yours; not only is obesity involved but freedom from cancer, heart disease, diabetes and all neurological disease.

You may now ask what is left to eat? There is plenty, so just stick with me for next time when we talk about the body fat burners.
