SUN CITY – Starting April 28, residents will receive a large wheeled cart for their plastic, paper, and metal recycled materials. It will be the same size and shape as the refuse containers that have been used since Sun City opened.
Distribution of the new 35-gallon carts will start by Waste Management crews on April 28 and will take two weeks to reach all neighborhoods. Residents may retain their own small bins for personal use, or WM will pick them up during the week of May 12.
This action is a response to resident experiences and complaints that animals often spilled materials in the smaller, uncovered bins, and winds sometimes blew materials onto yards and streets.
“The hinged lids will contain the materials better and are effective at keeping animals from spilling debris,” Waste Management said in a recent mailing to residents. “The carts are sturdier on windy days.”
All recycling materials can be co-mingled in the one container and need not be separated. The new recyclable containers will have yellow lids so they can easily be identified separate from refuse carts.
The new cart lids also will display do’s and dont’s of recycling. Recyclable materials include metal (steel, tin, and aluminum) food and drink cans, plastic bottles and containers, paper bags and goods, newspapers, paper cardboard containers, dairy and juice containers, flattened cardboard and paperboard, and junk mail and magazines. Materials that are not recyclable include food waste, plastic shopping bags, and polystyrene foam cups and containers.
The carts are owned by Waste Management and should be left at a home after it is sold and the residents move away, the company said. If a cart breaks or is damaged due to normal wear or tear, Waste Management will repair or replace it.
