Huntley Community Radio Update: December 4, 2014

By Dorothy Litwin

The past two years have been so exciting, and now that we’ve achieved our goal of becoming a Low-Power FM station, we look forward to a great future of continuing to serve our community. But with this additional service comes some additional expenses. We’re still an all-volunteer, 501c(3) not-for-profit organization, and we still cannot sell advertising, like commercial radio stations can. So we depend on, as the saying goes, “the kindness of strangers.” We know you are not “strangers”; you are our friends and, we hope, our community listeners. Without your past support, we couldn’t have done it. However, again we must ask for your help. FM broadcasting required some new equipment and services, and we also are planning on some future programming, such as being able to do remote broadcasts and have call-in shows. That’s also new equipment. And our day-to-day operating expenses, though modest, are still there. Just like you, we have rent, phones, services, and more. All the above was like they say, “the slow wind-up.” So here comes the pitch. We are about to start a fundraising drive so watch for the details in future columns.

Now, on to programming news. Beginning in the new year, we will be simulcasting an exciting group of brand-new programs. Subjects include taxes and finance, nutrition, handling disabilities, and a “handyman” series. United Way of McHenry County and Sun City will be regular contributors, and a show with the working title “Not Just on Veterans Day” will feature stories from Vets recollecting all their war experiences. “Community Connections” will be a monthly show featuring representatives from the Village, Park District, Library, Chamber of Commerce, and other community organizations with up-to-date news and events – sort of a community newsletter.

That’s the latest from your Community radio station.

WHRU. Don’t forget to tune us in. Set your dial, in the car or at home, at 101.5 FM and enjoy!
