Holiday safety tips from the Huntley Police

By Dwight Esau

Christmas brings us a lot of joy, fun, and family camaraderie. But it also reminds us of unpleasant and dangerous risks we take with our homes and possessions.

The Huntley Police Department once again is using the holiday season to focus our attention on burglaries and what we can do to prevent them.

“We typically see an increase in these types of burglaries during the holiday season,” said Deputy Chief Michael Klunk in a recent community alert.

Two more daytime break-ins occurred in late November and early December in Neighborhoods 3 and 7. Here are some of the most important suggestions that Klunk listed for Sun City residents:

Purchase a safe for jewelry and cash. Store your most valuable jewelry and items somewhere other than the master bedroom, where thieves go when they enter a home.

Place a piece of wood or a crossbar in sliding glass or basement doors. They are prime entry points.

Consider an alarm system. Contract with a service or do-it-yourself with a door wedge alarm. Post the alarm company decals on your doors and windows.

When leaving for trips, leave a radio or television on in the home so it appears someone is there.

Consider keeping a second car parked in the driveway when you leave, and remove your garage door opener from the vehicle.

Make sure doors and windows are locked, including garage doors. Several recent burglaries were through unlocked doors and windows.
