Be Bop a Lulu…

By Jim & Nancy Eggers

Jim and Nancy do not disclose the fact that they will review a restaurant before they attend, ensuring their reviews are unbiased and uninfluenced by their position with the Sun Day.

A good friend of ours, Kathy, invited us to join her and a group friends, for dinner. We jumped at the chance for two reasons. It would be a fun night out, and we found out that, on that particular night, you get 50% off on all appetizers and entrees at the recentley opened Be Bop A Lulu’s Rockabilly Cafe in Union.

The major change from the old restaurant was the John Wayne and Roy Rogers paintings were removed and replaced with Elvis and Patsy Cline. Sadly to say, the stuffed buffalo that was in the corner of the bar and was the resting place of many and overserved customer, like Nancy, is no longer there.

It was no surprise when we looked around and saw almost every table filled with fellow Del Webber’s. Could it be something to do with the 50% off promotion? Of course it was!!! Who could pass that up?

This article will be a little different. In an effort to give you a broader review, we will also tell you some of our friends’ comments on their entrees.

After our drinks were delivered, we all decided to place our orders. Jim and I started the evening off with an appetizer of the IPA Beer Battered Onion Rings ($6). What arrived was a medium size bowl of hot and crunchy onion rings. These were to our liking. Another guest had the East Coast Shrimp Cocktail ($12), which was served in a martini glass with the shrimp hanging on for dear life! Her appetizer was a winner.

On to our entrees. I was in the mood for a salad this evening so I chose the House Chopped Salad ($8) and added chicken for a $4 upcharge. This salad came with chopped iceberg lettuce, carrots, brocolli, tomatoes, sweet corn, cauliflower, ditalini noodles, and onions. This was tasty, but I couldn’t find the ditalini noodles in the salad.

Jim chose the Pulled Pork Sandwich ($9), which was served on a pretzel roll and came with homemade potato chips. The potato chips were awesome, but he and another guest agreed that the pulled pork could have been more tender and was in need of more barbeque sauce. Our friend Kathy had the Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato, and Basil Salad ($8). This also came in a martini glass. Ask yourself, how much can you fit in a martini glass??? After seeing that, Kathy asked the waitress to bring her a Shrimp Cocktail to complete her meal. Another friend had the Be Bop All American Burger ($7). This was a quarter pound burger and it came with homemade potato chips. If you wanted cheese on your burger that was a $1 upcharge, and bacon was a $3 upcharge. Seriously??? Another friend had the Buttermilk Battered Half Southern Fried Chicken ($14). This looked crunchy and moist and she said it was delicious. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!!!

Jim was the only one to have dessert this evening. Who could have predicted that? He wanted the Caribbean Key Lime Pie ($7.50). This was an average key lime pie, nothing to brag about.

FYI: This restaurant is handicap accessible, and they offer free entertainment on select nights, and tonight was one of them.

We asked the waitress about the small menu and she stated that they were working on expanding it.

Dining Duo Tip: Open your restaurant with a complete menu. You only have one chance to make a first impression.

Sometimes the star of the evening is the people you are with, and sometimes it is the food. Tonight it was clearly the conversation with friends.

The half-price for our night with friends was $27.47.

He Said: The homemade potato chips were my favorite.

She Said: I really enjoyed the entertainment that night, he had a great voice.
