Solar power in Sun City started earlier than originally thought

By Denise Moran

In the cover story titled “SC couple switches to solar power” of the July 25 edition, it was stated that Linda and Jim Robinson were the first homeowners to install solar panels in Sun City. The Sun Day later learned that Donna Badame was actually the first homeowner to install solar panels. The Sun Day regrets this error.

Donna Badame’s home in Neighborhood 27 became solar powered this summer.

“I had 14 solar panels installed on the south side of my roof in the middle of June,” Badame said. “They were put in before my birthday. It was a present I bought for myself.”

The solar panels were installed by Sun Badger Solar. Badame visited their booth at the Sun City Huntley Fall 2018 Consumer Showcase in October. She also attended an environmental fair in Crystal Lake where she talked with other solar power company representatives, but she decided to work with Sun Badger Solar.

Rather than lease the solar panels, Badame decided to purchase them. She said they were hooked up to the power grid in early July.

Badame’s home is the first house to have solar power in Sun City Huntley. Jim and Linda Robinson in Neighborhood 15 leased the solar panels on their home from Sunrun and had them installed in late June. Linda said their concern for our country’s aging power grid and the fact they could save money fueled their motivation for going solar.

Badame, who has lived in Sun City Huntley for the past two years, said she has always tried to do what is good for the environment.

“When I lived in Schaumburg, I had a two-bin composting system and a rain garden in my backyard,” she said.

Badame said her most recent utility bill was less than usual, but she expects her next bill will show a hefty credit after all the solar power generated by this summer’s heat. According to the AccuWeather website, there were 12 days in July, 2019, with temperatures of 90 degrees or more.
