Swimming for charity with Stingrays

By Joanie Koplos

Recently, Stingrays member, Pam Reigel, offered her club’s spring auction charity contribution, which included a swim in a downtown historic indoor swimming pool. Located in Chicago’s Inter-Continental Hotel, the 1929 Junior Olympic-sized 4 lane pool, is still today virtually unchanged in its Mid-East beauty. At the time of its construction, the 14th floor aqua center, holding 120,000 gallons of water, was viewed as an engineering feat: one of the highest built pools in the world!

On July 27, having tested its crystal clear waters amidst the room’s Egyptian, Assyrian, and Greek architecture, Reigel joined her fellow Stingrays swimmers in extolling their fabulous swimming experience! Together with Pam, Nancy Cihlar, Margarete Liedtke, Jackie McCague, and Joanie Koplos will long remember this remarkable afternoon. After all, what swimmer wouldn’t be excited to share a pool where “Tarzan” movie star and Olympic athlete, Johnny Weissmuller, and synchronized swim actress, Esther Williams, swam and trained!
