Ask the Woodchucks: October 17, 2019

By The Woodchucks

Question: Front Storm Door on a Petoskey. Donā€™t have a key for it. Do you know how/who can remedy this without installing a new lockset?

Answer: A locksmith could make a key that will open your storm door.

Question: We have a Mackinac with a front porch that faces the north.Ā The post is rotting out at the base.Ā Do you know who we could call to fix this?

Answer: Most of the Woodchucks do their own repairs so have little experience with repairmen, and therefore cannot help with recommendations. There are occasionally notes on the bulletin board at the shop that ask, ā€œcan someone call me to fix my ______?ā€ I have never in 18 years heard of someone answering one of these queries. Most Woodchucks have enough work with spouses, children, and grandchildren.

There are several repairmen that attend the Consumer Showcase in Sun City October 24. You should visit them with photographs of the damage that you need repaired. Iā€™m sure at least one of them could help you.

Question: My husband and I purchased our home in Del Webb Huntley three years ago. It is the Petoskey model. During the summer the panel furthest from the door started to get condensation that appears to be in between the two panels of glass. What can we do to correct or repair this? The pictures below show the panel that has condensation and then the entire door. We are looking for any ideas or advice you can give us to solve this problem.

Answer: Your problem is that the seal in the glass in your sliding glass door has failed and the glass must be replaced.

a Touch of Glass repairs most of the windows in Sun City. Call T. J. at 847-265-1100 or see her at the Consumer Showcase in Sun City October 24. You should replace this glass before winter. The argon gas that was between the two panes of glass for insulation is now gone so the heat loss through this window will be high.
