9 pumpkin spice products to define fall 2019

By Kelsey O'Kelley

Although everyone knows that the current season is called autumn or fall (or “spooky season,” if you’re really in the know), it seems like it really should be called Pumpkin Spice Season. People love autumn for a plethora of reasons, but lately, the only one that seems to matter is the fact that pumpkin spice can be found anywhere. In fact, Starbucks launched a campaign this year declaring the first day of fall to be August 27, which was the day they brought back the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte (or PSL).

I have always been a fan of the PSL, but the pumpkin spice magic goes far beyond one Starbucks product.

This year, I tried 9 pumpkin spice products so you don’t have to wonder about them anymore (spoiler: some are less edible than you’d think!)

Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte ($4.95)

The PSL has become the icon of fall. As soon as the PSL is available each year, social media becomes alight with posts and photos of everyone’s drink. Recommendation: if you try this drink, ask for half the sweetener if you want to taste the coffee part.

Califia Farms Almond Coconut Pumpkin Spice Creamer ($4.89)

I discovered this gem while rushing through Target. This is a non-dairy creamer (and only 15 calories per serving) that is perfect for an at-home latte, and a little goes a long way. Starbucks should be spooked!

Whole Foods brand Pumpkin Spice Granola ($3.99)

Honestly, this should have been a win. Pumpkin pie spices seem like they would fit so well with breakfast grains. I guess I’ll never know, since this mix of oats and pumpkin seeds seemed only to be seasoned with sugar.

Pumpkin Spice Cheerios ($2.99)

11 out of 10 for these little guys. I’ve repurchased Pumpkin Spice Cheerios multiple times, and I’ve wished for them out of season. They’re subtle, gluten free, and not as sweet as you might fear for a flavored cereal.

Pumpkin Spice RX Bar ($2.99)

I could spend a whole column writing about RX Bars, but I won’t bless you with that right now. In short, RX bars are made of mostly egg whites, dates, and almonds. This limited edition flavor joins the ranks of the year-round bars. Pro tip: make sure you have a glass of water nearby when eating these. They are a little chewy!

Burt’s Bees Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm ($3.59)

Burt’s Bees rarely disappoints, and this wasn’t one of those times. Pumpkin cosmetics are the real deal.

Mrs. Meyer’s Pumpkin Spice Multi-Surface Cleaner ($3.99)

I’m not sure why I thought a clean, pumpkin spice-scented bathroom or kitchen would be appealing, but let me tell you: it’s not. I think I found it on clearance last year, and I no longer wonder why it was collecting dust on Target’s shelves.

The Pumpkin Spice App ($2.99)

Honestly, I searched the iTunes App Store for a “pumpkin spice app” purely as a joke, yet there it was. If you truly cannot get enough pumpkin spice from food, drink, and household products, then this game is for you. It is next level boring and frustrating. The spice stops here.
