I totally agree with Mr. Sansom’s praise for this community but believe his last sentence was a political statement that should have been omitted, considering the manner his president uses to govern. It is time for civility and honesty on all levels, especially the president of this country.

As a 20-year resident of Sun City and a long-time volunteer at Animal House Shelter (AHS) in Huntley, I was very pleased with Joanie Koplos’ May 7 article “Self-Isolating Presents a Great Time to Get a Pet.” At the shelter, I see so many sweet dogs and cats, rescued from euthanasia, longing for a touch or any loving human attention. The more adoptions, the more are rescued. But, sometimes a commitment to a pet’s lifetime cannot be made by a Senior. That’s where, as Ms. Koplos mentions, fostering, which provides support from the shelter, can be an alternative and compassion at its best.

Fostering frees a dog or cat from a stressful shelter environment and creates a loving, temporary sanctuary until the forever family comes along. Having seen the happiness on the faces of children when their new friend is coming home with them, I am filled with joy and relief that one more precious life is saved. Years of love is then in store for a once-homeless creature who is now home at last. Besides adoption, fostering can also provide the best our human hearts can offer.

For details on fostering, AHS can be reached at (847) 961-5541.
