Hang Your Hat: September 10, 2020

As a senior, nurse and former teacher living in these pandemic politically-divisive times, Iā€™ve been worrying lots lately and I know Iā€™m not the only one.

I worry about the environment and that many regulations and policies that protect this planet (even clean air and drinking water) have been rolled back.

I worry about the chaos our poor students and teachers face heading back to school due to the lack of decisive national leadership and policies dictated by politics instead of public health expertise and science.

I worry that due to the deplorable way weā€™re dealing with COVID-19 in this country so many have lost jobs and businesses have closed which seems more reflective of our future economy than the present fluctuating stock market.

I worry as a senior about two institutions I depend on: our post office and social security both facing threats by the Trump administration.

I worry that the present administration has refused to acknowledge or investigate Russian efforts to intervene in our elections and Trump has stated he may not abide by election results.

I worry about the looting and damage caused by rioters (NOT by peaceful protestors against blatant racist actions.) I think back to 2015 when a white nationalist shot and killed 9 parishioners in Birmingham Alabama. That incident was handled without street rioting and looting under the Obama/Biden administration, as opposed to the present administrationā€™s actions which only escalate unrest and allow criminals to take advantage of the chaos.

Finally I worry that the present administrationā€™s inflammatory words, fear-inciting and doomsday scenarios all presented under the false guise of ā€œLaw and Orderā€ will convince many to vote for a leader whose actions have caused all the worries Iā€™ve listed. Can our nation and the world stand four more years of this worry and heartbreak?

My answer to Vincent Froberg in his unabashed praise of Trumpā€™s three and a half years in office!! No previous president before Trump has told more lies and his biggest lie was back in February when he claimed no more than fifteen (15) deaths would occur from the Virus and went on to encourage people to drink disinfectants and continually downplay the advice of medical professionals. We stand at 180,000 deaths and counting from this virus and he goes on to say, It is what it is.

Many professional Republicans from the Justice Department, Generals and former cabinet members say he is unfit for the job and I fully agree.

In view of the economic downturn caused by the global virus, the federal government has issued checks to individuals and businesses hoping to offset financial losses.

The economic merry-go-round is more obvious than ever since the global virus disrupted the world economy Unemployment rates hovered at about 3-4% prior to March 2020. Later, rates approaching 20% were common. Currently, the reported unemployment rate is 10%.

The federal government issued relief checks to individuals and businesses hoping to avoid even more serious setbacks. Discussions are ongoing to include relief in many areas including payments to avoid evictions and real estate foreclosures.

If relief is not forthcoming, consider the economic Merry- Go-Round. Tenants canā€™t pay rent; landlords receive less income; landlords canā€™t make mortgage payments; foreclosures; and finally, stockholders donā€™t receive bank dividends and therefore canā€™t pay their rent.

Multiply that scenario hundreds of times, maybe thousands, to comprehend the economic repercussions caused by the world wide menaceā€¦the virus.
