85K Veterans Memorial Field sign rejected

By David Goode

Six sample illustrations for a new monument sign at the recently renamed Veterans Memorial Field were presented at the June 22 meeting of the Sun City Board. The illustrations showed stone signs that were in the six feet high by nine feet wide range with ornamental stones as embellished frames.

The one that most closely resembled the design requested by the Strategic Planning and Advisory Committee (SPAC) came with an $85,000 quotation. The quotation included the removal of the existing Eakins Field sign and its large supporting foundation along with replacing the landscaping.

Board President Marilyn Berendt exclaimed, when hearing the quote, “I’m shocked at the price.” She continued, “can the size be reduced to fit the existing foundation or could we just change the letters on the current sign?”

Deanna Loughran, Executive Director said, “we need to know what you want” before we ask for another quote.

Vito Benigno, Board Member, said “we need to know the detail pricing for the elements.”

Bob McGouey, Board Member, added “what are our options?”

Dennis O’Leary, a member of SPAC was asked to comment. He said “it’s supposed to be a memorial.” He continued, “if you just want a sign, it can be changed.”

Benigno commented, “the field is the most important part of the memorial.”

Berendt added, “there will be signage on the scoreboard.” She instructed O’Leary to “get a quote to just change the letters.”
