The Witches’ Story

By June Leinwander

Into the night they gather and enter a cave from many directions, unseen by the naked eye. Only a few walk passed there. At times voices could be heard screeching sounds and wails of laughter. Hidden out of sight a brave man observed what went on there.

The witches danced around their brooms and swung them into the air. Far in a corner, a large cauldron that they rolled to a pile of sturdy branches. Four witched lifted the cauldron and snugly placed the branches as they done once before before. Pails of water from the river was poured into the cauldron. A witch scraped her nails and produced a flame that lit the branches on fire. Attached to the top of the cave hung bats; quickly the witches grabbed as many as they could and threw them into the boiling cauldron to be added to the brew, with lizards, snakes, rats, mice, and alley cats.

Visitors arrived in the darkened night. First to come was the creature from the black lagoon, dangling from his lips seaweed that he so desired. When the mummy arrived, and he was tangled up in his wrappings. The wolfman howled: Am I on time? Frankenstein reached out his arms save a plate of food for me.

Town people came together. No more, no more; they had to go. With torches in their hands lit up the night sky. The spy informed them the best time to come to the cave. Then screams of terror; the witches knew people were coming after them. Rushing around, the witches picked up their traveling brooms and pointed hats with just enough time.
