Remembering former MSDN reporter and Sun City resident Dwight Esau

By Chris La Pelusa

I recently learned that former MSDN reporter and Sun City resident Dwight Esau passed away.

To put it bluntly (because Dwight wouldn’t have it any other way when it comes to things published in a newspaper) the news stung. News does that sometimes, often times. It stings. Dwight’s passing stung hard for me personally because Dwight shaped this newspaper and news organization more than any single person who works or has worked for it, including me…its owner. He was our first reporter and he covered Sun City and local news so well that when he retired, I had to hire three people to fill his shoes. That’s how good of a journalist he was. He gave this newsppaper its voice when it was just learning to talk in its earliest days. He set a tone and a bar that is still in place today and all MSDN/MHN reporters are measured against it. He was fearliess in his approach to news and fact gathering. Therefore, he was fearless when speaking the truth.

I can honestly say that were it not for Dwight’s work establishing this newspaper and then managing its content, MSDN would not have been read nearly so much as it is.

Part of telling a good story isn’t what’s said but it’s what is not said. Dwight is like that now and forever will be in the pages of MSDN.

You may not see his words in print here anymore, but if you read between the lines and focus on what’s not said, there you will find Dwight Esau.
