Jim and Nancy do not disclose the fact that they will review a restaurant before they attend, ensuring their reviews are unbiased and uninfluenced by their position with the Sun Day.
Jim is the king of all procrastinators. We have a fluorescent light fixture in our closet that has been flickering and probably sending out Morse Code from some alien civilization. The messages finally stopped when the last bulb burned out. Time to get Jim’s lazy butt up on the ladder to replace it. First step is to go to a big box store on Randall Road to buy light bulbs.
Getting light bulbs used to be so easy. Do any of you remember going to the hardware store, showing them your electric bill, and getting free light bulbs? We do. Now everything is LED with either daylight, cool white, or warm white. Then there is dimmable, three-way, or wi-fi compatible. Fluorescent lights are the worst. They have re-wire, replace, ballast, or no ballast to name a few.
In our house the problem is compounded because Alexa controls everything. We even programmed her to say “hi” to Rosie just to drive the poor puppy crazy. But we digress, so on to the food…
On our way to the big box store, we passed a new restaurant in Carpentersville called Sunrise Social. It is in the building previously occupied by the Meat and Potatoes Restaurant, which probably went out of business because no one knew what they served. LOL.

Directions: Take Rte. 47 South to Freeman Road, turn right onto Galligan, left on Binnie Road, North to restaurant.
Estimated Travel Time: 15 minutes
On the inside, Sunrise Social resembles most of the newer breakfast/lunch venues. Bright white and gray accents in a modern décor, but with retro 1960s Sputnik lights hanging from the ceiling.
Jim and I sat down and perused their huge menu. Jim was lucky enough to get a Fall Special’s menu and spotted the Brisket Corn Bread and showed it to me and said, “doesn’t that look good?” I thought he was being a gentleman and suggesting it for me. Before I had a chance to reply, the moron said, “that’s what I’m going to have.” That burst my bubble, so back to perusing the men.
Obviously, Jim ordered the Brisket Corn Bread ($18) which was smoked brisket and cheddar, baked with corn bread, and served in an iron skillet all topped with honey butter and green onions. He said it was absolutely delicious and wished it was on their regular menu. It was that good.
Nancy was pouting since she couldn’t have the brisket, so she decided on the Build Your Own Omelet ($14 with two ingredients and 50¢ per additional item). She chose bacon, jalapeno, onion, and American cheese. This came with your choice of diced potatoes or hashbrowns, and toast or pancakes. She chose the hashbrowns and an English muffin. The verdict came in and it was just an average omelet. She was still pouting and wanting my dish.
FYI: This restaurant is handicap accessible.
This is a nice cheery brunch spot and they do have awesome specials. We spoke to the manager about Jim’s dish and she said she will be talking to the chef about making it a regular item on the menu. She told us other people were also inquiring about it being a permanent item on the menu. Next time we go there Nancy said she’s going to have it.
The price for our “Sunrise” meals were $44.60. Buying the right lightbulbs, priceless…
Jim’s take: My brisket special was creative, and sweet and salty at the same time. Nancy should try it sometime.
Nancy’s take: I took a healthy forkful of Jim’s entrée and it was to die for. I’m still pouting…
