Spring means Sun City Softball

By Glenn Groebli

Now is the time to put away the snow blower, clean up the lawnmower, and most importantly, get the bat bag out from storage and get ready to play Sun City Softball.

According to our records this will be the 17th year for the Sun City Softball Club. Through the years there has never been an admission charge and we will once again honor that tradition. This well could be the best value in McHenry/Kane County. League play will commence with a double header on Saturday, May 6, with the first game scheduled for 10 a.m. League play will consist of 12 teams in the 16” Evening League, 8 teams in the 16” Morning League and 4 teams in the 12” Wednesday Evening league. Over 220 players have registered for the 2017 softball season.

The deadline for new players to register is April 1. All new players who have registered will participate in the 2017 Draft Day to be held at Eakin Field on April 15 at 11 a.m. New players will participate in hitting, catching and fielding drills and then all players will be drafted by the managers of each team. Teams will begin to practice at Eakin Field on Saturday April 1. Two (2) teams have been assigned for each day Monday through Saturday.

Fans will love our new Patio area located behind the third base dugout and our updated sound system. The All Star game and Skills competition will take place on Friday, July 21, and will offer free hot dogs and water plus some great softball. The Skills competition this year will once again feature the Home run and Hitting accuracy events, plus this year we have added the throwing event which should add a lot for the fans to watch and maybe even participate. This is a great chance for the fans to come out and root their favorite player on.

Look for some great softball this year in all of our leagues. New players will add a lot to the teams that are right on the edge. In just a short 5-6 weeks all the action starts, the hits, great catches, the wins & losses and finally the great fans cheering on their team. Within a few weeks (weather permitting) the time has come for all “young” men & women to begin to get ready for the 2017 season and those familiar words of spring “Play Ball”.
