Shortly after moving here to Sun City in November 2004, I became a representative and coeditor to our neighborhood 22 newsletter. Early in 2006 a neighbor named Fran approached me and asked if we could get a ladies poker game together for our neighborhood. I advertised in our NB 22 newsletter and got a great response. Our original group was Fran G., Ann T., Carol W., Vivian, S. Mary L. Dorothy L. and me Betty B. I thought if we could get a group together so fast, just in our neighborhood, there must be a lot of people in Sun City waiting to play poker.

At that time the Northwest Herald was issuing the newspaper for Sun City, and I started advertising for poker players to setup poker groups. I continued to advertise in the Sun City newspaper from 2006 to 2020. I had setup over 25 men’s groups, over 30 ladies’ groups and 4 couple’s groups. Once a group was set up, my work was done unless someone dropped out of the group and they needed another player. So, it was an ongoing job for many years. When COVID hit, and Sun City people were no longer getting together in groups, I stopped advertising and later lost track of how many, if any, groups still existed today.

In June of 2022, I was inspired by a new neighbor who moved into my attached six plex, to go back into the poker business. Of course, he was looking to play poker. I once again started advertising in the Sun Day. The response had not been as overwhelming as back in 2006, but I have in this past year setup 3 men’s groups, 3 ladies’ groups and possibly one couples’ group.

It has been a long and mostly happy road from 2006 to 2023. I have lost many friends that I personally played poker with along the way. From the original group back in 2006, only two of us are still around today. However, many friends I played poker with are now in nursing homes or have also passed in recent years.

I want to thank all the people who contacted me and allowed me to take information from them to join one or more poker groups. I am now retiring due to health issues and if there is anyone in Sun City who would like to take over my work, I would be pleased to help them get started.

Thank you Sun City Poker Players.
