The Huntley community continued its support of Illinois Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) at the “Tip A Cop” event.
The event, held July 5 at Culver’s of Huntley, has been held there for more than 20 years. Huntley Citizens Police Academy Alumni assisted in accepting tips from customers.
Special Olympics Athlete James Williams, who medaled in multiple sports at State Special Olympics, was on hand. Williams won first place in the 4 x 50 relay event at state swimming and also finished third in the 50-meter breast stroke and fourth in the 100-meter freestyle events for the Dolphins swim team of Dundee.
“The LETR is the largest grass roots fundraiser in support of Special Olympics,” Huntley Deputy Police Chief Amy Williams said. “The best thing is to see the relationships that have been developed with the Special Olympics athletes.”
The Huntley Area Lions Club made a presentation of a check for $500 for Illinois Special Olympics LETR.
“We were joined by our amazing Special Olympics athletes James Williams, Jonathan Steiner, and Mike Aicher, and our Citizen Police Academy Alumni Volunteers. We also had a check presentation made by the Huntley Area Lions in support of Special Olympics,” Huntley Police Department Deputy Chief Amy Williams said. “Culver’s has been a long-time supporter of the Law Enforcement Torch Run. For the past 22 years, Culver’s has hosted, welcomed, and supported the Police Department and Special Olympics. We are deeply grateful for everything they do to help this amazing cause. The event would not be successful without our great community.”
“It’s a great cause,” retired Huntley police officer Gary Schwartz said. “I’ve also been at the ‘Cop on a Rooftop’ at Dunkin’.”
The LETR was held June 10 for the local race and the state final leg was June 24 at Illinois State University in Normal. The torch run marked its 39th year.
